Meet first-year GEOS grad student Sofia Weinstein in this month's GEOS spotlight! In addition to her studies in geology alongside Dr. Christy Visaggi, Sofia also competes for the GSU women's golf team as a graduate transfer after coming from Hamilton College in New York. Learn more about Sofia in our Q&A below!
Where are you from originally?
I am from Dallas, Texas!
Where did you go to school before coming to GSU?
I attended Hamilton College in Clinton, New York for my undergraduate.
What year in school are you?
I am a first-year master's student! Currently in my second semester at GSU.
What’s your major/concentration?
I am majoring in Geosciences with a concentration is Geology.
Which class has been your favorite to take in the Department of Geosciences?
Definitely Environmental Justice with Dr. Milligan!
What is your favorite thing about being a GEOS major at GSU?
The faculty! They are all so passionate and caring and eager to help out students when they can.
What are you working on right now?
I work with Dr. Christy Visaggi in the Conservation Paleobiology Lab. We are currently researching Plio-Pleistocene fossil shells from localities on the coast of Georgia and Northern Florida. I am also a TA and teach Intro Geology 1 and 2 labs. I love being able to share my love for geology with other students.
What are you planning to do after GSU and how do you think your GEOS degree has prepared you for that?
I plan to get a PhD after getting my master's at GSU. I want to be a professor after that!
On top of my involvement with the GEOS department at GSU, I am also on the women's golf team at GSU! It has been fun being able to study what I love in such a good department while also continuing to play the sport I love competitively! Unfortunately, this is my last semester of golf, but I am excited to still have another year of GEOS!
