After a long month of January, we are excited for the return of the monthly GEOS spotlight and our first spotlight on an undergraduate geography major! This month we're excited to share our Q&A with Anna Jarrell, a senior GEOS major concentrating in geography. Check out our Q&A with Anna below to learn more about her and her journey to GSU and beyond!
Where are you from originally?
I am from Dunwoody, Georgia.
Where did you go to school before coming to GSU?
I started my undergrad journey at Georgia College and State University, and then took a gap year to complete a service year with AmeriCorps NCCC FEMACorps before transferring to GSU in the summer of 2022!
What year in school are you?
I am a senior and I have been at GSU for a year and a half now!
What’s your major/concentration?
My major is Geoscience with a concentration in Geography and I am pursuing a certificate in Geographic Information Systems.
Which class has been your favorite to take in the Department of Geosciences?
Picking one favorite class is difficult, but I would probably say Urban Geography with Dr. Hankins because being able to situate what we were learning within Atlanta was such an awesome class opportunity! The walking tours that the class goes on were highlights in the semester!
What is your favorite thing about being a GEOS major at GSU?
My favorite thing about being a GEOS major at GSU is the community! As you start to have more classes in the major, you learn who else is a GEOS major and the faces and names become familiar, and often those people become your friends!
What are you working on or researching right now?
Right now, I am a Water Quality intern with the South River Watershed Alliance! I am responsible for collecting, processing, and reporting water quality data to monitor for sewer leaks. I have really enjoyed the work so far and I am excited to continue and learn more!
What are you planning to do after GSU? How do you think your GEOS degree at GSU has prepared you for that?
After graduating GSU, I hope to find a job in GIS before returning to academia in a few years to pursue a master’s degree. The knowledge that I have gained from my GEOS courses have prepared me for entering a GIS career field because it has taught me invaluable practical skills.
